NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER

Job Summary: The Product Development Engineer is responsible for taking designs from Product Merchandising through commercialization, including validating the designs meet customer and product requirements, and documenting the designs in specifications and drawings. This position is also responsible to ensure designs efficiently utilize quality and cost-effective materials, accounts for production capabilities, as well as supports the company commitment to producing innovative, top quality, durable bedding.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities, and Key Results Area:

* Lead the Technical Team to accomplish design, validation and documentation of component and product designs to meet customer and product requirements; and project goals for key metrics for performance, margin and consumer retailer satisfaction.
* Use technical knowledge to create product specifications, ensure product meets specifications and customer requirements, including stack up and design rules, EHS safety guidelines, component and cover specifications, design and aesthetics, etc.
* Collaborate with the test labs to develop new tests as required to validate newly identified requirements and/or claims.
* Responsible for ensuring the compliance to the NPD tollgate process; will collaborate with other functional resources at each step of the process and report-out at tollgate presentations
* Determines and validates component and prototype specifications; develops bills of materials, including raw materials requirements, time requirements, etc. Will collaborate with Strategic Sourcing on raw material resources and options
* Lead Design Reviews, perform DFMEAs, component and prototype trials, durability and functionality testing, EHS testing, etc. for product validation purposes to ensure product meets the full range of requirements; troubleshoot and resolve issues to ensure product meets testing requirements
* Work with marketing and legal to develop claims and substantiate through validation testing
* Manages prototype and design pilots to produce samples for testing to validate the design.
* Supports manufacturing pilots which validate manufacturing process faithfully reproduces the design.
* Anticipates and analyzes potential technical problems, dimension risk and collaborates cross-functionally to prevent/mitigate them.
* Support new production processes and launches to ensure product is manufactured according to design, safety, and quality specifications
* Assists in NPD initiatives, communicates with NPD team and other resources as required to support product development initiatives and rollout. Provides design and technical expertise as needed.
* Critical to the role is an understanding of standard validation testing methods and procedures; this position is expected to first spend a predetermined amount of time working in the test labs.
* Other duties as needed to support overall strategy and success of product development initiatives and rollout.

Other primary duties and responsibilities include the following; however, Management reserves the right to assign or reassign other appropriate duties to this job at any time. * Demonstrated proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS SharePoint, SolidWorks, Minitab (or other statistical software).

* Member of Global Product Engineering as part of the New Product Development team.
* Internal Partners: Sourcing; Engineering; Finance; Manufacturing; Marketing; Consumer Design; and Project Management Organization

To perform this job successfully, the employee must be capable of performing each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements herein are the minimum levels of knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

Qualifications:

* Degree in Mechanical, Textile, Product Testing, or Industrial Engineering (or other related Engineering discipline)
* 5+ years of experience in an engineering or operations organization delivering consumer products; or through a validation engineering role.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements: Fast-paced corporate office environment. Some stress may occur. Regular travel is not expected in this position; however, travel around scheduled projects such as program rollouts may be necessary.
