The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Central Design and Engineering Services is looking for an Engineering Assistant I/II to help us Keep Alaska Moving!


 In this Engineering Assistant I/II position in the Utilities Section under the Traffic Safety and Utilities Group, you will work closely with utility companies to deliver utility relocation agreements for DOT&PF projects and review utility company permit designs for authorization to install within the Department's managed Right-of-Ways (ROW). Under the general supervision of a Registered Professional Engineer, you will perform engineering duties such as research, development and final production of utility conflict reports, utility company relocation project agreements, utility permits, and associated utility construction inspection support. The utility permit program will be a primary focus for this position.

At the Department of Transportation & Public Facilities' Traffic, Safety, and Utilities section we are stewards of the State of Alaska's highway corridors and airport properties. We work to manage these assets by responsibly coordinating the placement of utility infrastructure within the right-of-way. We contribute to 'Keep(ing) Alaska moving through service and infrastructure!' by facilitating the relocation of utility systems to allow for expansion of Alaska's highways.

The working environment you can expect
This position resides in the DOT&PF Central Region Headquarters building in Anchorage, AK located at 4111 Aviation Ave. The position's duties requires the flexibility to work overtime and accept both long term and short term travel assignments to support utility relocation support during construction as necessary by assigned projects. Long term travel assignments are not anticipated during the first two years of employment.

  • Minimum Qualifications

    Engineering Assistant I
    Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.

    Or:
    A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.
    AND
    An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

    Special Note:
    An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.

    Engineering-In-Training or Flex Engineering Assistant I/Engineering Assistant II positions will be identified by the employing department.

    Engineering Assistant II
    Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
    AND
    One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant I with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

    Or:
    A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.
    AND
    An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
    AND
    One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant I with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

    Or:
    Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician III with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

    Substitution:
    Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant I. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

    Transcripts which indicate the credit hours earned for the specific coursework may be requested at the time of interview or prior.

    FLEXIBLY STAFFED
    This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Engineering Assistant I or II level depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. There is the opportunity to advance to the Engineering Assistant II level upon management's assessment that the incumbent is performing adequately and has successfully completed training as an Engineering Assistant I.

    WORK EXPERIENCE

    EDUCATION
    If post-secondary education is required or is used as a substitution to meet the minimum qualifications, it is required to complete the Education section of your Profile.
