Position Overview The Senior Protection Engineer will be a key member of the Protection & Automation Standards and Innovation team providing technical expertise and support to Protection & Automation Engineering personnel and other internal and external stakeholders. This position provides technical leadership, consultation, and hands-on support to ensure that SCE?s protection & automation-related design standards, training and reference materials, work processes and procedures, and tools and databases are constantly evolving to meet the needs of the Protection & Automation team and key stakeholders. The Senior Protection/Automation Engineer will be expected to make significant contributions towards realizing Protection & Automation Engineering?s vision ?to be an industry-recognized leader in shaping innovative protection and control solutions that facilitate the safe, reliable and affordable operation of SCE?s modernized, evolving grid.? Typical Responsibilities: Lead the identification, development, and documentation of new and/or modified protection and/or automation-related design standards and requirements to meet emerging technical challenges on the SCE grid. Lead/support innovative solutions to reduce wildfire risk, detect downed conductors, and mitigate arc flash risks to personnel. Provide ad hoc technical consultation and support to help resolve novel or complex protection/automation-related issues on the SCE grid. Lead/support ASPEN relay setting database import to CAPE software tool. Support in programming effort to automate existing calc sheets, relay setting import, relay summary, and relay programming (SEL and GE hardware). Develop and design electronic calculation sheets/applications for streamlining Protection & Automation work process. Provide technical consultation and support in creating standards in Protection Automaton area (RTU, HMI, PLC, SEMT, Node Category Standards, etc.). Develop and maintain SCE protection-related technical documentation and reference materials (e.g., protection philosophy documents, relay setting guidelines, relay application notes, internal work control procedures, etc.). Provide ad hoc technical consultation and support on design/document Automation process and procedures. Represent Protection & Automation Engineering on selected pilot/demonstration project teams to drive innovation in the area on Distribution Automation. Represent Protection & Automation Engineering on selected internal technical committees (e.g., Line & Bus Committee, Substation Standards Review Team, Protection Technical Forum, etc.) Represent Protection & Automation Engineering on selected industry technical committees and working groups (e.g., WECC Relay Work Group, IEEE Power System Relaying Committee, NATF System Protection Practices Group, etc.) Support in all technical aspects involving Protection & Automation Standards and Innovation roles/responsibilities. Collaborate with Grid Operations, Substation Construction & Maintenance, Telecom Engineering, and other internal partners to identify and implement process improvements. Minimum Qualifications Nine or more years of engineering work experience. Experience with Protection and/or Automation Engineering. Desired Qualifications Bachelor?s Degree. Experience interpreting and/or designing electrical one-line, elementary, and protection logic diagrams. Master?s Degree. Licensed Professional Engineer. Project Management certification. 10 years or more of experience working in a Protection Engineering organization. Familiarity with SCE system protection practices, philosophies, and standards. Experience using ASPEN relay database, Computer Aided Protection Engineering (CAPE) software, and AutoCAD. Familiarity with SCE substation design standards. Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
