The Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office of The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a Research Faculty (non-tenure) to join the Acoustics Division. This position will involve modeling and measurement research in the area of physical acoustics, with a focus on acoustic and vibration damping materials, treatments, and composites, including metamaterials. Responsibilities include: Preparing and conducting experiments at ARL and various off-site government testing facilities using advanced instrumentation; identifying and performing appropriate numerical and analytical modeling; writing and submitting proposals for funded research; cultivating relationships with existing and potential government and industry sponsors; collaborating with other research and academic faculty at Penn State; and documenting research activities in technical reports and peer reviewed publications. Faculty rank will be commensurate with education level and experience. Minimum requirements include a Master`s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Acoustics. Other preferred experience includes: Familiarity with data acquisition systems and data acquisition system development; proficiency in programming within the MATLAB environment; and familiarity with government research programs and the proposal submission process. Expertise in vibration measurements and modal analysis techniques, as well as finite element and boundary element analysis, is required. To be successful, you must possess: Good written and verbal communication skills; the ability to work independently and meet project schedule requirements; and the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Domestic and international travel occasionally will be required to support testing. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen. This is a one-year, fixed-term renewable appointment.
