Position Description Bioinformatics Scientist
Oerth Bio (pronounced 'Earth'), a joint venture between Bayer and Arvinas, is an early-stage and well-funded agricultural biotechnology company. The Oerth Bio team will develop an entirely new model for global crop protection to address one of the greatest challenges facing the world: sustainably feeding the growing global population. Oerth Bio will be committed to leveraging Arvinas PROTAC (PROteolysis TArgeting Chimera) protein degrader technology to create innovative, safe, and sustainable agricultural products and evaluating the potential to address resistance mechanisms in plants to existing agricultural solutions, with solutions to control weeds, insects, diseases, and abiotic stressors by leveraging the selectivity and other features of PROTAC protein degraders.
Oerth Bios headquarter is located in vibrant downtown Durham, NC close to many shops, restaurants and public transportation. The holder of this position is not expected to travel significantly.
This position reports to the VP Biology.
Bioinformatics scientist will drive the computational biology platform to dramatically increase the rate of discovery. This critical position will be essential for identifying novel E3 ligases and potential protein targets for the design of efficacious PROTACs for agricultural applications.

Key Responsibilities, Including by not limited to:
Analyze plant, insect, and microbial genomes, transcriptomes and particularly proteomes
Manage omics data using a backend relational database to retrieve and process data efficiently and represent data through a custom or acquired visualization tool
Leverage AWS or other IaaS providers to scale computational processing requirements
Interact with pertinent CROs and service providers to increase productivity and capabilities
Build, maintain and document scientific code base for scalability and sharing of knowledge
Express complex computational concepts in common terms to experts and non-experts
Work collaboratively within and across different departments, participate actively in all discussions and think creatively for solutions to challenging problems
The Successful Applicant
Master's degree or Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, or a related discipline with two years of relevant experience
Fluency in Python, R (e.g. Bioconductor) and SQL (e.g. PostgreSQL) and knowledge of Perl, Ruby, or C
Working knowledge of high-performance computing clusters
Strong knowledge of biochemistry to communicate effectively with biologists and chemists
Experience developing and applying machine learning, deep learning and other predictive statistical methods to interrogate large set of data
Familiar with client-based or web-based data visualization tools such as Spotfire and R shiny.
Knowledge of Rosetta software suite or other protein structural modeling tools
