Capabilities within the Group include molecular, cellular, and synthetic biology; microbiome engineering; rapid DNA sequencing; bioinformatics; microfluidics; mass spectrometry; laser spectroscopy; and organic chemistry. These capabilities are applied to missions spanning chemical, biological, and explosives (CBE) detection and attribution; medical diagnostics and countermeasures; pathogen identification; point-of-care diagnostics; molecular intelligence; biosecurity; and DNA forensics.
Position Title: Staff Member Physical / Analytical Chemist
Position Description: The Biological and Chemical Technologies Group seeks a candidate to lead a multidisciplinary team to develop new methods and applications of chemical analysis. In support of this objective, they will lead a team in the design, construction, and testing of mass- and/or ion-spectrometry instruments capable of analyzing samples in complex vapor and/or liquid matrices. The successful candidate will also have expertise in sample preparation via liquid-phase extraction and/or chromatographic separation. The candidate will have a successful track record of leading small teams, a strong theoretical understanding of chromatographic separation science, ion-molecule chemistry, ionization methods, and ion mass filter types and designs. Experience or familiarity with ionization source design and construction, microfluidics, protein mass spectrometry, and/or immunochemistry is a plus.
Position Requirements: A Ph.D. in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, physics, or equivalent with at least five years of experience designing, modeling, building, and testing mass spectrometers within a product development environment. Experience in ion trajectory modeling for use in the design of ion separation instruments is required. Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong organizational skills and self-motivation; and the demonstrated ability to lead and work in a team, are also required.
