A Day in the Life. The Principal Electrical Engineer will join a team responsible for developing a major subsystem of a robotic surgery platform. S/he will manage a small team of electrical engineers and will serve hands-on as the technical lead for electrical/micro-electronics development. Responsibilities include characterizing the performance of existing electromechanical/electronic assemblies as well as leading development of next-gen robotic subsystems.. Manage small electrical engineering team and oversee an electrical engineering lab. Design, fabricate and test analog and digital circuits, including sensor integration, signal conditioning, motor controllers, embedded microcontrollers and communications circuits. Perform circuit simulations and mathematical analysis to optimize circuit design and component selection. Prepare and participate in design reviews. Design and test custom printed circuit boards and cable assemblies. Develop and test embedded microcontroller firmware. Collaborate with mechanical and software engineering teams to integrate and test electromechanical subsystems. Characterize systems to understand performance variability arising from manufacturing tolerances and environmental conditions. Analyze and test electrical system reliability and thermal performance. Participate in FMEA and provide safety evaluation reports. Release fully-documented designs in PLM system. Collaborate with test engineers to complete V&V test program including EMC and reliability testing. Collaborate with manufacturing to develop in-circuit and functional test equipment and improvements in manufacturing processes. Propose and develop concepts for Next-Gen product architectures through analysis, prototyping and test. Must haves: Minimum requirements:. Bachelor's degree required. Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience. Nice to haves:. A minimum of 7 years of experience developing electronics for commercial products including transfer to manufacture (robotics or medical device experience strongly preferred). Demonstrated track record serving as a technical lead/manager. Mixed signal circuit design (analog and digital). Development of designs with embedded microcontrollers. Schematic capture and PCB layout. Programming in C for embedded systems. Experience with MATLAB or other scripting language a plus. Experience implementing serial communication protocols (ethernet, SPI, I2C, RS-422 etc.). Strong foundation in electrical engineering theory. Strong analytical skills. Working knowledge of control theory and experience with motion control strongly preferred. Experience specifying/controlling various motor types (brushless DC, brushed DC, stepper) and data acquisition from various sensors (joint angle, proximity, temperature) strongly preferred. Hands-on ability to debug and test (oscilloscope, function generator, signal analyzers etc.). Ability to solder fine-pitch components. Familiarity with electrical safety compliance and testing, including IEC 60601. Experience in all phases of the product development lifecycle including feasibility, design, V&V and transfer to production. Experience documenting medical device development according to Quality System Regulations a plus. Effective communication skills and ability to work cooperatively within a multidisciplinary team.
