Lygos is an industrial biotechnology company developing novel microbial technologies for the fermentative production of commodity and specialty chemicals. Lygos identifies expensive, environmentally hazardous, and harmful chemical and petrochemical production processes used today and develops safe, renewable routes to the same products. Lygos is seeking to hire an experienced Scientist to support its metabolic engineering needs to develop new microbial strains to efficiently produce a variety of products.
Design, strain construction, strain characterization, protocol development, modelling and exploratory research will be necessary elements of the successful applicant s duties. The successful applicant will be expected to advance critical aspects of Lygos strain engineering program through both effective individual and team efforts. Research objectives are milestone driven (biocatalyst yield, titer, and productivity) and require workflows directed toward achieving these milestones. It is anticipated that this position will require 50 75% time in-lab at the bench.
Independently conceive, plan, design and successfully lead and complete metabolic engineering projects targeting specific nodes of host strain metabolism and/or enzyme activities.
Deep understanding of yeast cellular physiology and metabolism and the processes associated with target molecule production such as product transport, energy usage, redox metabolism and impact on cellular health.
Maintain an in-depth knowledge of advances in yeast metabolic engineering and routinely educate fellow team members on critical advances.
Prepare technical reports, quantitative analyses, protocols and scientific presentations.
Close collaboration with all aspects of Lygos team, including synthetic biology, analytical chemistry, bioinformatics, and fermentation groups to interpret data and find creative solutions to problems.
Work to develop strain, enzyme, pathway, and process-related intellectual property.
Supervise Research Associates; ensuring team member s individual discoveries are quickly integrated into optimized host strains.
There will remain significant time and opportunity to also participate in many other aspects of Lygos technical efforts, including: protein engineering, adaptive evolution, high-throughput screening and other areas of technology development. Lygos works closely with all employees to support career development and facilitate the learning of new skill sets.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Energetic, hard-working, perseverant and creative team player with a demonstrated ability to plan and execute multiple demanding independent research projects.
A Ph.D. with an emphasis on yeast metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, protein engineering or metabolite transporter biology with 5+ years of relevant experience, preferably in an industrial setting. Or, an equivalent M.S. with 8+ years of relevant experience.
Proficient with genetic engineering bench work.
Demonstrated success in technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaborations with others.
Strong organization skills and proven ability to manage details.

Ability to deliver on projects and assignments within timeframes and budgets.
Experience engineering a range of microorganisms a plus.
Experience working in a high-throughput environment preferred.
