JanssenResearch & Development, LLC, is seeking an experienced, highly skilled, andmotivated medicinal chemist to work in our laboratories in Spring House, PA,for the position of Principal Scientist, Automated Chemistry - Discovery Chemistry. This position will require the candidate topossess and leverage deep knowledge and capabilities to deliver differentiatedclinical candidates to the Janssen product development pipeline within ourDisease and Pathway Area Stronghold strategy. Using a mix of internal and external resources, the Principal Scientistwill partner with key stakeholders within the therapeutic areas and otherinternal groups, represent medicinal chemistry and lead cross-functionalproject teams, and be co-responsible for building, managing, and deliveringhigh quality clinical molecules into the pipeline. Responsibilities of thePrincipal Scientist will include:

  • Drive and directmedicinal chemistry functions for one or more drug discovery projects, workingin concert with partners in molecular and cellular biology, pharmacology,computational chemistry, ADME, structural biology, chemical development, andother key functions
  • Utilize parallelsynthesis technologies and high throughput chemistry to prepare libraries ofcompounds relevant to ongoing hit-to-lead and lead optimization strategies formultiple programs
  • Analyze screening data,perform literature reviews, design, propose, and execute medicinal chemistryplans, coordinate chemistry and biology data to support compound progressionand patent strategies
  • Supervise and directsynthetic chemistry activities internally and/or at contract researchorganizations (CROs)
  • Participate in portfolioand stage-gate reviews, lead the preparation and presentation of dossiers forclinical candidate nomination and compound advancement
  • Participate in shapingand implementing strategies that support medicinal chemistry growth objectivesat Janssen
  • Serve as a scientificexpert in medicinal chemistry with both internal and external partners andprovide recommendations regarding new targets, new synthetic strategies andemerging external opportunities.
  • Ensure optimalinteraction/communication and provide updates on project status to Discoveryleadership
  • Maintain significantpersonal laboratory presence

  • Qualifications
  • A PhDin synthetic or medicinal chemistry with 7 years of related experience is required
  • Postdoctoral experience is preferred
  • A minimum of 7 years experience inthe biopharmaceutical industry with a proven track record of innovativeprojects and key contributions to clinical candidate selection, preferably asproject leader is required
  • Broad experience and proven accomplishmentsin medicinal chemistry with operational skills for managing discovery programsat the level of a senior chemist/team leader and a proven track record ofdelivering clinical candidates is required
  • Expert knowledge of modern methods ofsynthetic and medicinal chemistry with ability to successfully andsimultaneously conduct medicinal chemistry on multiple projects is required
  • Demonstrated experience with automation,parallel synthesis and purification techniques
  • Solid understanding ofcellular/molecular biology, biochemistry, disease pharmacology, mechanisms ofdrug metabolism and molecular toxicology, pharmaco-kinetic and pharmaco-dynamicsciences, and formulations for the invivo evaluation of drug candidates is required
  • Thorough understanding of DNA-encodedlibrary technologies and protein target degradation strategies is preferred
  • Experience with computationalchemistry methods and biophysical techniques such as X-ray crystallography andmacromolecular NMR is preferred
  • Ability to integrate multiple R&Ddisciplines into a successful strategic project plan is required
  • Strong problem-solving skills fordeveloping creative, innovative solutions, and meeting project objectives are required
  • Demonstratedinfluence, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, including the abilityto succeed within a matrix environment are required
  • Experience in managing projects,aligning actions with overall strategy, and supporting business cases fordecision-making is preferred
  • Strong track record of scientificcontributions including peer reviewed first-author publications, patentapplications, and presentations at major national meetings is required
  • Maintaining a lab presence andspending up to 30% of time in the lab is required
  • Up to 10% travel both domestically andinternationally is required
