The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a permanent, full-time PBT Monitoring Field Lead (Natural Resource Scientist 2) position. This position is located in our Headquarters Building (HQ) in Lacey, WA.
The PBT Monitoring Field Lead position is responsible for leading field operations as part of a statewide monitoring program in the collection of the data which is used to support chemical action plans designed to reduce and eliminate persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) chemicals in the environment and inform other pollution control actions within Washington State.

Duties


The Environmental Assessment Program provides a range of scientific, monitoring, laboratory, and quality assurance services. Its mission is to measure, assess, and communicate environmental conditions in Washington State.
Under the administrative supervision of the TSU Supervisor, and in consultation with the PBT Monitoring Program lead (NRS 3), this position's responsibilities include:Defining the nature of research necessary to meet specific and limited objectives, which are identified through consultation with agency management, related to environmental toxics monitoring of PBT chemicals within Washington State.
Performing natural resource research, requiring the use of conventional techniques and compiling available scientific literature and data, including conducting surveys and analyzing and recording field data conditions, in order to better define/describe the occurrence, distribution, and temporal trends of PBT chemicals within the environment.
Preparing quality assurance project plans (QAPPs) and scientific reports.
Leading field operations including scheduling field work; gear preparation and use; instrument calibration; collection and preparation of environmental samples (water, wastewater treatment plant effluent, sediment, fish tissue, and others), which often require the use of specialized boats; and, overseeing sample shipment to laboratories.
Coordinating scientific collector permit applications and reporting requirements for the PBT program.
Conducting statistical analysis and quality assurance review of environmental data.
Using various software programs, such as ArcView GIS, Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, and statistical software packages for data analysis and mapping, and report preparation.

Performing data management, coordination and safety tasks, which include:Performs data reduction, analysis, and entry of project data into Ecology's Environmental Information Management System (EIM).
Assists with development of protocols and procedures for conducting aforementioned duties.
Participates in unit, section, and program committees and meetings as appropriate.

QualificationsRequired Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree with a major study in a natural, environmental or physical science, or one of the natural sciences, fisheries science, or other closely allied field
AND
Three (3) years of professional research work experience in environmental surface water, and/or sediment and fish tissue monitoring.
A Master's degree will substitute for two (2) years of the required years of experience and a Ph.D. degree will substitute for all of the required experience, provided the field of major study was in the specific specialty.
