As the Precision Mechanical Engineer, you will work within the Applied Research & Development (AR&D) Department of the Corning Optical Communications Division. Our AR&D team combines a deep understanding of Fiber Optic telecommunication systems with fundamental knowledge of structured materials to develop new advantaged optical products and processes. You will focus on early stage development of high performance optical connectors leading to demonstration of new technologies and processes to drive business growth.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

?Precision mechanical design of optical connectors and cable assemblies
?3D Computer Aided Design with application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing to ensure precision assembly and the desired optical performance
?Modeling / simulation of components and assemblies using Finite Element Analysis to predict reactions to forces and other physical effects
?Material evaluations supporting performance improvements, cost reductions, and long-term reliability
?Design for low-cost manufacturability including automated assembly and high-volume injection molding of plastic components
?Define, order, and procure materials and components for prototyping
?Hands-on assembly and testing of prototypes to verify performance
?Documentation of experimental plans and associated test procedures
?Analyze test data and document results in technical internal reports
?Participate in teams to solve problems and improve processes using structured methods / statistical tools
?Collaborate with both internal and external resources to tap into expertise
?Coordinate third party suppliers to drive completion of project goals
?Benchmark existing technologies to identify potential business opportunities
?Improve existing laboratory process capabilities and measurement equipment
?Mechanical design support for other development projects

Travel Requirements (please note if international):

?We anticipate travel to be up to 10% (depending on the project)

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

?40 hours per week with overtime as needed
?Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm
?Flexibility is supported

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

?Bachelor's Degree in a Science or Engineering field; Mechanical Engineering preferred

Required Skills

?3D CAD proficiency with familiarity of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
?Analytical modeling skills using linear and non-linear Finite Element Analysis
?Understanding of precision manufacturing, measurement, and automated assembly

Desired Skills

?Knowledge of optical connector designs and related cable assemblies
?Understanding of optical fiber and associated manufacturing processes
?Experience with component design for high volume precision injection molding
