Position Description
As the Division Manager, you will:
  • Plan, direct and manage the Division with approximately 105 staff members and eight direct reports
  • Provide professional civil engineering expertise and technical assistance on projects required as part of the 6-year Capital Plan and Operations & Maintenance activities
  • Oversee the progressive discipline policy and procedures of the Division
  • Develop staff to implement and to support the Division and Department programs and initiatives, especially focused on meeting Tacoma 2025 goals
  • Anticipate, manage, and plan for change both internal and external
  • Educate customers, stakeholders, partners and the public about relevant regulations and practices
  • Coordinate with other City work groups, divisions and departments
  • Review technical work produced by staff and consulting engineers
  • Make presentations to City Council, Committees, Governmental Partners and the Public
  • Develop a vision / strategic approach to support the Environmental Services Strategic Plan 2018-2025
  • Actively prepare the Division biennium budget and participate in the City wide budgetary process

  • Other Responsibilities:
  • Compile information and prepare reports related to division operations and activities; oversee the maintenance of departmental records and files
  • Oversee and participate in construction inspections and review plans and projects to assure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances and regulations
  • Keep current with the latest technologies and management techniques, federal, state and local rules, regulations and laws; set goals and discuss division performance with the Assistant Environmental Services Director on a regular basis
  • Confer with other Environmental Services Division Managers to coordinate work efforts whenever necessary or desirable
  • Direct the preparation of and/or authorize various correspondence concerning division operations
  • Attend management and technical training seminars and workshops

    Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in engineering, science, public or business administration,
  • Four years of administrative and supervisory experience in governmental environmental services or utility administration.
