Description: As a Senior Manager in the role of Capabilities Group Manager, you will be part of a small team of passionate and accomplished experts accountable for cultivating and managing strategic technical capabilities essential to the mission and vision of Blue Origin’s Advanced Development Programs business unit. ADP is responsible for all of Blue Origin’s orbital and planetary flight systems, services, and products, including the NASA Human Landing System, Blue Moon commercial lunar lander, and a wide range of concepts, proposals, and development projects for ADP product lines.

Group Manager positions lead subject-matter-expert groups within ADP’s Systems Engineering section:

  • Systems Engineering Section groups are dedicated to the stages of the “systems engineering V” for flight system development: architecting, generating requirements, integration, and verification and validation. Groups are designated for Architecting, Requirements, Design, Integration and Test, and Systems Management.
  • ADP has a matrix organization: Groups own subject matter experts along with their processes, tools, and standards, and staff projects led by Product managers (who own project budgets, schedules, SOWs, and deliverables).

    As a Systems Engineering Group Manager, you will directly manage a Capabilities team of 5 – 15 subject matter experts. You will provide the people, processes, and tools essential for best-in-class performance in the respective subject domain. You will be responsible for cultivating an evolving, rightsized workforce; overseeing performance, merits, and promotions; shepherding team members careers through coaching, opportunity matching, and technical development; overseeing negotiation of their deployment onto multiple programs and reconciling demand conflicts; benchmarking their work standards and tools with other Blue Origin business units and with industry trends; and assuring that the Section’s work products meet domain quality standards. These responsibilities will comprise approximately one-third of your time.

    With the remaining approximately two-thirds of your time, you will be a technical contributor in your area of expertise, providing technical support directly onto one or more product teams. In this capacity, you will be responsible for exemplifying best practices, balanced technical judgment, and superior work ethic.

    Responsibilities:

  • Supply people, processes, and tools needed to meet the demand signals specified by project and program managers. Negotiate Statements of Work with the respective product managers.Supply group staff to projects, reconciling project needs with staff capabilities and negotiating time commitmentsWhen demand signal exceeds group capabilities or capacity, work with Section Director to secure contract labor as needed
  • Manage your direct reports’ professional development (e.g., hiring, performance reviews, compensation and promotion management, routine one-on-one development conversations) and coach them on performance.Ensure staff are properly trained, including to operate within the Blue Origin safety cultureObtain performance feedback for employees from the product managers they have worked for in the evaluation periodProactively counsel your employees’ career growth, by understanding their unique goals, capabilities, and experience and matching against current and future needs.Facilitate development opportunities for your employees to align with ADP product needs, advance the capabilities of the Group’s community of practice, and increase employee satisfaction.
  • Organize and equip the Group and assure that its staff are trained:Set and prioritize Group goalsManage the Group’s labor and non-labor budgetCoordinate access to key technical resources (e.g., standards, journals, references)Develop, maintain, and implement a plan for acquiring software, models, and analysis tools needed, and processes for capturing staff best practicesDevelop and maintain team performance metricsCoordinate and integrate with like capability groups and expertise across the companyBuild relationships with universities and other external stakeholders in the domain area, for benchmarking, recruiting pipeline, and collaboration purposes

  • Qualifications:

    Required

  • Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical or Systems Engineering or like field.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience managing technical teams and/or leading functional groups, with responsibility for technical quality of work delivered, and career management of employees
  • 6+ years of industry experience in system formulation, development, and/or operations with technical experience in at least one specialty area applicable to the science of space flight, development and operation of space flight systems, and/or performance of subsystems and project technical functions.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
