Wireless Communications Engineer



Applied Technology Associates (ATA) is seeking an experienced wireless communications engineer in support to the Air Force Research Laboratory Space Vehicles Advanced Technology (SVAT) contract. The engineer will be an integral member of a joint government and contractor team that operates in a very dynamic environment. The engineer’s duties will span research and development in formulating concepts, system design, building mockups/prototypes, testing feasibility, designing and conducting experiments, modeling and simulation, preparation for flight experiments and execution of flight experiments. In addition, the engineer may be required to assist on SVAT contract-related tasks as needed.

Essential Functions

The Engineer’s duties will include:

  • Support and perform research and development (R&D) of wireless communication system hardware (radio frequency (RF) components and systems) or software (wireless communication digital signal processing)
  • Develop guidance on laboratory methods and specific metrics to test RF front-end system, subsystems, and components and/or digital wireless communication architectures
  • Systems engineering analysis of requirements
  • Document progress of R&D towards operational wireless communication capabilities
  • Represent ATA well with customers
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

    This job operates in a professional and secure office environment. This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines, and other equipment as needed.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

    This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are nominally Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.


    Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.

    Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree plus ~5-years of experience or master’s degree from an accredited university in relevant engineering or physics fields with an emphasis in applied electromagnetics, communications, or signal processing
  • Must be a United States Citizen, able to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD Security Clearance
  • Experience with research, development, testing (laboratory and field), and verification of RF hardware (front-end systems, antennas, subsystems, and components) and/or wireless communication digital signal processing
  • Familiar with laboratory testing apparatus, e.g., spectrum analyzers, signal generators, bit-error-rate testers, vector network analyzers, oscilloscopes, and multimeters
  • Demonstrated ability to document research progress
  • Preferred Education and Experience

  • PhD in engineering or physics with an emphasis in electromagnetics, communications, or signal processing
  • Active U.S. DoD security clearance
  • Experience developing satellite communication link budgets
  • Experience using LabVIEW for data acquisition
  • Experience using MATLAB or Python to process and analyze data
  • Experience using electromagnetic finite element method solvers, e.g., HFSS, CST, COMSOL
  • Experience with ELINT, SIGINT, and COMINT
  • In-depth knowledge of propagation impairments inherent to wireless communications
  • Experience with satellite communication forward error correction techniques
  • Experience with software defined radio programming
  • Proven leadership experience
  • Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of technical staff
  • Experience in business development and creating new program opportunities with new and existing customers
