OverviewA123 Systems, LLC is a leading developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries and battery systems for the transportation and commercial markets.Position OverviewAn opportunity has arisen for a Polymer Scientist to join our team that specializes in the development of next generation lithium-ion anode materials. The successful candidate will be laboratory based and will contribute to anode binder development for battery applications. Primary job responsibilities include generating new ideas and approaches for the development of next generation high capacity anode materials in accordance with A123's technology roadmap. Attending to these responsibilities will require working closely with electrolyte, cathode, and cell scientists and engineers co-located in A123's Waltham facility as well as in Hangzhou, China. One position is open to those with graduate research and further industrial experience.ResponsibilitiesPrimary Responsibilities* Anode development areas of focus include:* Polymer design and synthesis* Active material surface to polymer interactions* Optimization of polymer structure and functionality* Incorporation into electrode prototypes* Develops and implements synthesis and process strategies for the above areas of focus as well as the needed material characterizations.* Determines pathways to ASTM testing for polymer characteristics including modulus and chemical resistance measurements* Generates SOPs for all synthesis and process conditions* Interact with laboratory technicians, scientists, and engineers. Periodically reviews technical results with broad team in presentation setting.* Works with material suppliers for material evaluation and validates technologies for transfer to the cell development team* Systematically reviews prior art and peer-reviewed publications for relevant information.* Drives for Results - The passion to set and meet high standards of performance.* Drives Accountability - The ability to establish clear, measurable goals and deliver on commitments.QualificationsSpecific Skills/Abilities* Advanced knowledge of polymer characterization techniques including FTIR, DSC/TGA, rheological studies (GPC, XPS, XRD, NMR, SEM-EDS are also a plus)* Experience with chemically modifying thermosetting and elastomeric polymers for desired mechanical and chemical properties* Ability to utilize various polymerization techniques: emulsion, step growth, chain growth, cationic.* Utilizing knowledge of crosslinking techniques and types of polymer branching* Polymer purification, post processing development, and practiced ability to design for solubility, molecular weight, and functional group degree of substitution* Electrochemical energy storage device binder development experience a plus* Thinks Analytically - The ability to break down problems, gain understanding, and make effective decisions with a team* Thinks Creatively Needed attribute as the problems at hand require novel solutions* Advanced written communication skills applied directly to the preparation of technical papers, patent specifications, presentations, applications notes, engineering statement of work (ESOW), standard operating procedures (SOP), and other such documents.* Excellent oral communications skills with the ability to speak with clarity and interface effectively with co-workers.* Able to use molecular drawing tools for presenting schema* Effective time management in a semi-autonomous environment with the ability to work independently and as part of team.* Knowledge of lithium-ion battery assembly and characterization preferred.* Committed to environmental, health and safety requirements.* Proficiency in Microsoft office including Word, PowerPoint, and ExcelEducation/Experience* D. in materials science/engineering, polymer chemistry, or related field* 1-2 years industry/academic (post graduate) experience for entry level scientist position* Industry experience preferred* A proven track record of synthesis of novel materials in laboratory and production settings* Fluent in EnglishA123 is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employerPosted by StartWire.
